the map two points and for the more access was still challenging even though we had everything in one place these were masters and this one place was nothing more than storage there is no software layer for managing rights and access so that is to say that the level %HESITATION the Lehrer rather that managed access was people so as you can see for curator to access a work there are various people various systems and process sees for accessing these materials have likely heard of it's called archive Matica it is free and open source software made by artifacts school systems speaking there's nothing about a video file that says hello I am a video file this is my file format this is my Kodak this is my resolution and my color space you need good meditative for that so what we do is when we put things through archive Matica we extract this information and we recorded in a very human readable and machine readable format and this gets packaged with the digital collections themselves so that when we pull this thing out of storage in twenty years well not only know that we have a bit perfect copy but we'll be able to actually understand what the heck this thing actually is library and %HESITATION we also would have a certain amount of spinning disk storage which would be very fast and then you have servers on which the software lives that manages all of this so archiving software which is called a store abstracts all of this and it provides a just one storage now so archive Matica doesn't know anything about the LTO doesn't know anything about the hard drives he just knows I have this and a fast now and I put things here but what actually happens behind the scenes is that there is one of these complete systems that lives at fifty third street here fixity checks will do it on a policy base level of checking when you access things rather than just simply linearly going through your entire repository and checking periodically and we'll do it at a rate that we can actually guarantee that any time there's a corrupt file will be able to replicate it from one of the good known good copies and you'll never ever leave something and if you do you will pay for it petabytes here are comparisons of various storage solutions so up here the very highest and most expensive ones we have cloud based storage so if we were to say try and execute the three copies in three locations on Amazon S. three as you can see that would be incredibly expensive %HESITATION similarly %HESITATION archives direct part of actual systems interspaces partnership that offers Argonautica as a service and cloud based storage it's actually a little bit more affordable than storing three copies an S. three so now if you were to say well glaciers cheaper so why wouldn't you G. glacier and sort of Amazon S. three well there's a good reason because you can access things in Glacier would be exorbitantly expensive and even if you were to say okay well we won't access that %HESITATION it would still be quite expensive sets the purple line there this Green Line is our current hard drive based storage so we're still pretty expensive there even if we own the infrastructure and each year we're just paying to add on to it %HESITATION archive in is the lowest here obviously this is a no brainer data tape is much more affordable than hard drives were talking you know double digit cost per terabyte versus you know three figure costs per terabyte outgrow the base unit of the T. S. forty five hundred meaning that currently LTO six is two point five terabytes uncompressed but we're going to skip LTO seven go right to LTO eight and it's going to be quadrupled the capacity LTO if you're not familiar with it has a published roadmap odds managed by a consortium so in summary as I said archiving needs not only moma's hi preservation needs but also our financial needs and how we access things that's to say we're museum you know we show things when we choose to show them or even if we were showing them on demand we have a very large collection you know the typical thing with museums is that what's in the galleries is just the tip of the iceberg you know your only showing maybe eighty percent of your collection at any given time so if we don't show things if we act requires something exhibit and then don't show it again for another ten years why would we be paying to store it on high cost disk storage when we can have it on something more intelligent
